Types of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation can be administered through several different methods, depending on the patient's overall health and the level of relaxation required. Below are some of the Sedation Dentistry options we provide at our Vaughan dental office.

  1. Nitrous Oxide: Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a pain-relieving, sedating gas that is combined with oxygen to put patients at ease during dental care. In just 2-3 minutes, nitrous oxide takes effect, leaving patients with a slight tingly feeling and a general sense of numbness that takes the edge off for the following procedure. For an even more comfortable experience, patients can request for a relaxing music during their session.
  2. Oral Sedation Dentistry: At our dental clinic in Vaughan, we typically use benzodiazepines for oral sedation dentistry. These oral medications are safe and effective. Oral sedation allows patients to remain awake and able to communicate while simultaneously minimizing the impact of stimuli around the dental office. In many cases, patients fall asleep during treatments as a result of oral sedation.
  3. IV Moderate Sedation: Also known as sleep dentistry, intravenous sedation is often considered the most comfortable, especially for those who have serious dental anxiety or are undergoing lengthy procedures. IV sedation dentistry or sleep dentistry results in a state of semi-consciousness. Patients are not fully aware of what’s happening but can still respond to verbal commands and light touches.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Anesthesia and Sedation Dentistry

  • What is Sedation Dentistry?: Sedation dentistry is when dentists use approved medication and pharmacological agents to induce relaxation or sleep in patients before a dental procedure. The best sedation options will depend on the patient, the required sedation level, and the treatment type. Our dentists assess the best choice on a case-by-case basis for the most effective results.

In Ontario, dental offices must have a permit to provide sedation dentistry. A dentist administering sedation must also maintain a current sedation license. Authorizations to provide sedation require annual renewal, and this can only be obtained by maintaining good standing with RCDSO and attending educational courses on a regular basis to meet the criteria.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

There are always risks in agreeing to any type of sedation; however, sedation dentistry is typically safe when administered by a licensed healthcare provider. In addition to continuous monitoring of patients’ vitals, proper sedation dentistry training is essential. The dental office is required to maintain its sedation permit, and the doctors must maintain their licenses and update their knowledge on a regular basis.

Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Nitrous oxide is an effective light sedation method used to counter mild dental anxiety or “take the edge off” during dental procedures. When a patient inhales Nitrous Oxide through a nosepiece or a mask, its relaxing effects can be felt within 3-5 minutes. The dentist can control the amount of Laughing Gas throughout the procedure. Once the treatment is complete, the dentist will switch to pure oxygen to flush out the Nitrous Oxide from the system. You will be able to drive home and resume your day-to-day activities within 15-30 minutes.

How Does Oral Sedation Work?

Oral sedation, typically administered before dental procedures, involves a commonly prescribed benzodiazepine, such as Triazolam. This medication targets receptors in the brain associated with anxiety, effectively managing anxiety symptoms.

The patient is usually given a pill an hour before the treatment. Oral sedation may put you to sleep. However, you will still be able to communicate with the doctor. With oral sedation dentistry, you will need a family member or a friend to drive you home.

What Is Sleep Dentistry?

“Sleep Dentistry” or IV Moderate Sedation are the same terms used for sedation dentistry because patients often sleep with some sedation methods.
During IV Moderate sedation at our dental office, patients can expect a fully licensed ACLS-certified nurse to monitor their vital signs during the procedure. You can also expect a second provider in the room who will oversee the IV Sedation safety and protocols. A licensed Dental Assistant will support the doctor’s needs during the procedure. Lastly, you can expect a blanket to keep you warm and cozy during the procedure.

What Preparation is Needed for Sleep Dentistry?

Before any level of sedation can be agreed upon, the patient must schedule a consultation with the treating dentist. The initial visit will allow the patient and the doctor to review the relevant medical history and agree on a proposed treatment plan.

Once the date has been agreed upon between the office and the patient, below are the instructions that must be followed:

  • The patient will not be allowed to go home on their own. There must be a responsible adult to pick you up after the procedure and safely take you home.
  • The patient should come in for the procedure having fasted for 8 hours in advance.
  • It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing.
  • The patient should not be wearing nail polish.
  • Any changes to the health history since the initial visit must be reported to the treating doctor prior to the appointment.

What Happens After Sleep Dentistry?

The recovery time for IV Moderate Sedation is typically around 24 hours. Therefore, you will need to wait for at least a day before you can return to your everyday life activities.

At Expo City Dental, our dentist in Vaughan is here to help you get the care you need to support your smile.

Hear From Our Patients

Maria Michelman
Maria Michelman says:

I was having some intense tooth pressure out of no where one day and I emailed Expo City. Immediate responses, they took me in right away as a new patient, they were super sweet and super informative, discussing cost options with me. I just had major surgery recently and I'm going through procedures still and the team was super on top of it. Very caring for my neck, asking if I was comfortable, very clear on potential next steps so they don't overlap with my medical procedures. Dr. Farzin worked with me today, he was super sweet, gentle and funny. The receptionist was incredible and very patient with me when my cards were malfunctioning at check out. Definitely come here for dental help, especially if you're fortunate to live in the buildings upstairs like me.

Fantastic Service. I had a tooth extraction a few weeks ago. The staff was so professional and very nice. The surgeon was really good. Everyone from the nurse to the assistant was professional and very nice. The surgeon even walked me to the car I was going to be driven in, because I was all drugged up from the anesthesia. 5 Stars!

Dr Faarzin was so awesome. I wanted to do close my gap tooth and after consulting with the team at expo he recommended I go to an actual orthodontist as my case was a bit complicated. And during my braces treatment I had to extract couple tooth of course I went back to expo and it was a pleasant experience. He cracked jokes which took my mind away from the pain & helped called my nerves. Highly recommend
