Wisdom Teeth Removal

Do You Need to Remove Your Wisdom Teeth?

The short answer is no if you don’t have any pain or discomfort. However, if a patient experiences any pain, persistent discomfort, or any of the following problems, our dentists at Expo City Dental will recommend wisdom teeth removal.

  • Pain in or around the wisdom tooth, swelling, infection, difficulty opening mouth
  • Damage to the adjacent tooth
  • Inability to properly brush teeth in the back
  • Severe, unrestorable cavity
  • Recurring gum infection around the wisdom tooth
  • Lesions or sores on the gums
  • Potential cause for teeth crowding, change in bite & jaw misalignment

We may also recommend that you preventatively schedule a tooth removal during your regularly scheduled check-up when our experienced dentists in Vaughan detect potential problems that may arise in the future.

What Is an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

Ideally, wisdom teeth should develop vertically and erupt unproblematically in alignment with the other teeth. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Impacted teeth occur when a wisdom tooth is not able to erupt through the bone or the gum. As a result, they grow horizontally and cause a number of related oral health problems. Tooth removal for impacted wisdom teeth can help protect against damage to other teeth, eliminate pain, preserve your bite/tooth alignment, and minimize the risk of infection.

If you’re experiencing difficulty opening your jaw, tender gums, and severe pain, you may have an impacted wisdom tooth. Book a visit with our dentists in Vaughan to explore your treatment options with our experienced team at Expo City Dental.

Wisdom Teeth & Complicated ExtractionWisdom Teeth & Complicated Extraction

Our Extraction Process

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: We begin with a detailed examination and digital x-rays to assess the position and condition of the tooth.
  • Personalized Treatment Plan: Based on your evaluation, Dr. Farzin will develop a customized treatment plan to address your needs.
  • Sedation Options: We offer various sedation options to ensure your comfort during the procedure, including local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation and sleep dentistry.
  • Surgical Extraction: Using advanced techniques, we carefully remove the tooth, minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues.
  • Post-Extraction Care: After the extraction, we provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and prevent complications.

Can You Keep Your Wisdom Teeth?

Occasionally, patients express the desire to save the wisdom tooth; however, the primary treatment for pain caused by a wisdom tooth is generally the extraction. It is only in very specific situations where there is a medical reason to restore and preserve wisdom teeth. Our dentist at Expo City Dental is equipped to make the right decision for the benefit of the patient.

Should a Patient Remove All Wisdom Teeth at Once?

Wisdom teeth removal should only be done if necessary. If there is no pain and no visible current & future risks, our dentists recommend waiting to see whether there will be a need. However, it is common that patients opt to have all wisdom teeth removed at once for several reasons:

  • There is no pain now, but wisdom teeth are known to cause problems eventually.
  • One-time recovery resulting in less time off work or studies
  • One-time surgical preparation and having to deal with anxiety associated with dental visits
  • From a financial perspective, extracting 4 wisdom teeth at once, especially if it’s planned to be done with Sleep Sedation (IV Moderate Sedation), is usually more cost-effective than undergoing the procedure multiple times.

If you have concerns about your wisdom teeth removal and want to consider options like sleep dentistry, talk to Expo City Dental. We are committed to helping our patients find the best options for their dental health.

Recovery & Aftercare

Proper aftercare is crucial for a smooth recovery. Here are some tips to help you heal quickly:

  • Rest: Take it easy for the first 24 hours after the extraction.
Ice Packs: Apply ice packs to reduce swelling.
  • Medications: Your dentist will often prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers if needed
Soft Foods: Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing near the extraction site.
  • Oral Hygiene: Keep your mouth clean, but avoid brushing the extraction site for the first 24 hours.

Once a patient has completed their wisdom tooth removal at Expo City Dental, our staff will provide detailed aftercare instructions. On average, you can expect to feel much better within 3-5 days. It will take several weeks for the gums to recover completely, but our dentists will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure everything is healing correctly.

Manage Dental Anxiety with Sleep Dentistry

Wisdom teeth extraction is a serious procedure, especially when all 4 are being removed at once. So, it’s reasonable that there will be some level of fear in anticipation of a procedure. Hear From Our Patients

Maria Michelman
Maria Michelman says:

I was having some intense tooth pressure out of no where one day and I emailed Expo City. Immediate responses, they took me in right away as a new patient, they were super sweet and super informative, discussing cost options with me. I just had major surgery recently and I'm going through procedures still and the team was super on top of it. Very caring for my neck, asking if I was comfortable, very clear on potential next steps so they don't overlap with my medical procedures. Dr. Farzin worked with me today, he was super sweet, gentle and funny. The receptionist was incredible and very patient with me when my cards were malfunctioning at check out. Definitely come here for dental help, especially if you're fortunate to live in the buildings upstairs like me.

Fantastic Service. I had a tooth extraction a few weeks ago. The staff was so professional and very nice. The surgeon was really good. Everyone from the nurse to the assistant was professional and very nice. The surgeon even walked me to the car I was going to be driven in, because I was all drugged up from the anesthesia. 5 Stars!

Dr Faarzin was so awesome. I wanted to do close my gap tooth and after consulting with the team at expo he recommended I go to an actual orthodontist as my case was a bit complicated. And during my braces treatment I had to extract couple tooth of course I went back to expo and it was a pleasant experience. He cracked jokes which took my mind away from the pain & helped called my nerves. Highly recommend
